Police arrested a local man on charges relating to a firearm and drugs after he was spotted on Sycamore Street in Columbus.
Officers saw Ivan Carlos Chavez-Lozaya, 28, of 931 Pearl St., who was wanted on two arrest warrants, sitting in a vehicle in the 1500 block of Sycamore Street at 5:10 p.m. Thursday, said Lt. Matt Harris, Columbus Police Department spokesman.
Officers from the city’s Intelligence-led Policing Unit and the Joint Narcotics Enforcement Team attempted to take him into custody after getting him out of the car, but Chavez pulled away, Harris said. He was taken to the ground a short time later, Harris said.
While officers were struggling with Chavez, several people left a nearby home and began yelling profanities and advancing toward officers, Harris said. Additional officers arrived and assisted with maintaining control at the scene.
After handcuffing Chavez, officers found marijuana and methamphetamine that he had concealed in his clothing, Harris said. Officers also recovered a loaded .40-caliber handgun that Chavez had concealed in his pants, Harris said.
Officers determined that Chavez did not have a permit to legally carry the weapon. Chavez was arrested on the two Bartholomew County warrants and additional preliminary charges of possession of methamphetamine, possession of marijuana, resisting law enforcement and possession of a handgun without a license with a previous conviction.
He was being held in lieu of $92,000 bond in the Bartholomew County Jail, jail officials said.
