Safety first: Training to feature scenario for gas line

Enertech, the Indiana Utility Regulatory Commission and Vectren will present Columbus Safety Day at the Bartholomew County Fairgrounds Family Life Center from 8:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. Wednesday.

The free event, at 750 W. County Road 200S, will include area first responders and utility representatives, along with Columbus and county workers, responding to a hands-on scenario safety training of a staged pipeline rupture. The scenario will be at 12:30 p.m., demonstrating what happens when a natural gas line is struck by mechanized digging equipment and what steps need to be taken immediately.

A gas line will be pressurized with air for the event to simulate the natural gas.

A presentation on the Indiana Dig Law begins at 8:30 a.m., along with instructions about the importance of calling 811 prior to any excavation to make sure underground utilities are located prior to dirt being moved.
