River cleanup planned

Staff Reports

The Friends of the Muscatatuck River Society is hosting the 17th Annual Spring River Cleanup on April 28. It’s also known as the Ninth Annual Kevin’s Kleanup in honor of Kevin Jayne, former president of the organization.

Registration is 8 a.m. at the Vernon Commons, located off Jackson Street in Vernon. A brief safety instruction, equipment distribution and group location assignments will be conducted before going to the river sweep locations.

Volunteers will have the opportunity to canoe a section of the Muscatatuck River or walk along its bank while collecting trash and helping the environment and community. Participants interested in canoeing during the cleanup must provide their own canoe.

The cleanup is open to anyone, but small children should be accompanied by a parent or responsible adult. Participants should dress in clothing appropriate for outdoor work and relative to the current weather conditions. Participants will conclude their day at noon at North Vernon City Park Shelter House No. 1, where lunch will be provided from food donated by local businesses.
