Letter: Separating children from families at border cruel

From: Michael Greven

Columbus

The United States government is forcibly separating children from their parents at the Mexican border. The United States government, our government, under the direction of President Donald Trump, Vice President Mike Pence and Attorney General Jeff Sessions, is forcibly separating parents from their children at the Mexican border.

Yes, you have read that correctly. I was stunned and horrified when I heard about this on National Public Radio this past week. You can listen to the report at: npr.org/2018/05/28/615010170/how-the-trump-administrations-family-separation-policy-is-playing-out.

White House Chief of Staff General John Kelly is quoted as saying, “The children will be taken care of — put into foster care or whatever” in response to a question by NPR reporter about whether it is “cruel and heartless to take a mother away from her children.” Sessions is quoted as saying, in regard to families immigrating with children, “If you are smuggling a child, then we will prosecute you as required by law. If you don’t like that then don’t smuggle children over our border.”

What kind of lunacy is this and what kind of a depraved mind would come to the conclusion that it is acceptable to traumatize children as a “law” is enforced? Before it is even understood why someone is trying to cross the border, the children are made victims of an unreasonable and inhumane “law” that has determined that it is acceptable to make a child’s life dispensable.

Wow, is this really the action of the country that I have lived in and loved for the past 60 years of my life? My stomach convulses at the image of the children being separated from their parents and placed in “foster care or whatever” as a biased legal system treats the parents like chattel in lieu of human beings.

There is something very inhumane and fundamentally repugnant about the manner in which President Trump, AG Sessions and VP Pence treat those who are forced to flee their homeland. They simply don’t give a darn about the fact that those at the other end of their tirades are human just like the rest of us. It is equally incomprehensible to listen to leaders of the Christian evangelical movement praise these individuals as if they were actually in some manner following the teachings of Jesus Christ. That is shear and utter nonsense, and the behavior of Trump, Sessions and Pence begs more accurately being described as blasphemous.

William Lloyd Garrison, one of the great leaders of the abolition movement, wrote many years ago, and I quote: “My country is the world; my countrymen are mankind.”

Our nation would be better served if our “elected” leaders would study and implement the writings of Garrison more diligently. I urge all members of our community to contact VP Pence and your legislators to end the separation of families and children forthwith. This cruelty must end immediately.
