Fire destroys detached garage on California Street

Fire destroyed a detached garage in the 900 block of California Street and damaged a nearby house and other structures.

Columbus firefighters were sent to the home at 12:23 a.m. Sunday after a neighbor reported the garage on fire to 911, said Capt. Mike Wilson, Columbus Fire Department spokesman.

When firefighters arrived, they found the garage fully engulfed in flames, Wilson said. The garage was declared a total loss and the residence, owned by Columbus Rental Homes LLC, had damage to the vinyl siding at the back of the home, Wilson said.

Vinyl siding was also damaged on two other garages at 911 and 921 Chestnut St., which are across the alley from the California Street residence.

The California Street rental home is vacant, firefighters said. The property there sustained $15,000 damages, firefighters said. The Chestnut Street garages were estimated to have less than $5,000 in damages each.

No injuries were reported, Wilson said. The cause of the fire has been listed as undetermined, he said.

Agencies that assisted at the scene included the Columbus Police Department, Vectren,  Columbus City Utilities and Duke Energy.
