Library offering program about opioid impact

The Jennings County Public Library and Centerstone’s Opioid Crisis Response Team will unite to present an information session about people suffering from drug addictions and how those around them are affected.

Centerstone counselor Elizabeth Sickels will present the free, public program “You Are Not Alone: How Opioid Use Is Affecting Your Friends and Family” from 6 to 8 p.m. Aug. 21 at the library, 2375 State Road 3 North in North Vernon. The program is considered appropriate for adults and teenagers.

“The Centerstone team has given this program at many other venues and we have heard many good things about it. So when Centerstone asked us if we would consider hosting a session, we agreed right away,” said Rose-Marie Howell, the library’s adult services director.

“There is a real need in this community to answer questions for people going through this because someone they love is addicted to opioids or other drugs,” she added.

The session is designed to answer the question “Why?” and give advice on how to discuss the problem with someone who is addicted, Howell said.

Library staff already have created a public display of books and information pertaining to the opioid crisis and other drug addictions.

“Our job is to provide information to our community, and if our community is experiencing a problem as a community then we have an obligation to provide as much information as possible,’” Howell said.
