North Vernon man arrested after accused of causing a disturbance in downtown Columbus

A North Vernon man was arrested early Sunday morning after a disturbance in downtown Columbus.

Columbus police were sent to the area of Fourth and Washington streets at 1:50 a.m. Sunday about a report of a man who was screaming, said Lt. Matt Harris, Columbus Police Department spokesman.

Officers found the man, identified as Joshua K. England, 37, North Vernon, a short time later, Harris said. They noted England was slurring his words and was having trouble maintaining his balance, Harris said.

England was arrested and allegedly kicked an officer while he was being secured in a patrol car, Harris said. When he arrived at the Bartholomew County Jail, England is accused of kicking a female jail officer in the chest, Harris said.

England was arrested on preliminary charges of public intoxication, resisting law enforcement, disorderly conduct and battery on a law enforcement officer, jail officials said.
