North Vernon man arrested after being found slumped over steering wheel

NORTH VERNON — North Vernon police arrested a local man on drug-related charges after he was  reportedly slumped behind the steering wheel of a truck in front of a store on Buckeye Street.

Police were sent to the store parking lot at 8:01 a.m. Saturday and identified the man as  Rodney Calvert Jr., 33, North Vernon, said Sgt. Andrew Richmond, police department spokesman.

While speaking with Calvert, Officer Lucas Newsom noticed a syringe in plain view, Richmond said.

When the vehicle was searched, officers found two more syringes, about 8 grams of methamphetamine and several prescription pills not in their property containers, Richmond said.

Calvert was arrested on preliminary felony charges of possession of methamphetamine, legend drug violations and possession of syringes, Richmond said.
