Students create artwork for postcards

Artwork created by four local students is featured on postcards celebrating United Nations International Youth Day.

Kyle Kingen, Zoe Clulow, Tim Cox and Caleb Warren created the artwork on the free SHINE ON postcards, which are available at 12 different Bartholomew County locations.

Kingen, who graduated from Columbus North High School, is studying art history at the Herron School of Art and Design in Indianapolis, while Clulow is a Columbus East High School senior.

Cox is studying architecture and industrial design at Virginia Tech University and Warren is a student at IUPUC, where he is pursuing a degree in innovative management.

The artists submitted their visual interpretation of the “shine on” theme, with each of the designs reflecting their unique perspective, according to the Council for Youth Development. The postcards celebrate United Nations International Youth Day, which celebrated annually on Aug. 12.

“We believe every young person would appreciate an encouraging word from a caring peer or adult. Sharing these beautifully designed postcards for free allows anyone in our county the opportunity to celebrate our youngest residents,” said Heather Carson, Council for Youth Development director.

Carson said the purpose is to allow the public to pick up a postcard and write a nice note to someone. This is the second year the postcards are being distributed in Bartholomew County after a pilot program was launched a year ago.

“We really believe everyone has an opportunity to make a difference in a young person’s life,” Carson said.

The Council for Youth Development printed 8,000 of the postcards, which became available at different sites earlier this month.
