Church’s skylight project highlights successful collaboration

First Christian Church is Columbus’ first example of Modern architecture, a design of famed architect Eliel Saarinen that is one of the most popular sites for tourists.

Among its notable features are glass blocks covered by a skylight that allow a large cross on a wall in the sanctuary to be illuminated with natural light.

However, leaking led to water damage and needed repairs of this architectural gem, which opened in 1942.

The church could have saved money by roofing over the glass blocks and skylight, but decided not to alter the original intent of Saarinen. This was no small undertaking, costing $160,908 to preserve the natural lighting design, which included a new skylight.

Fortunately, church members and community organizations came through and provided another example of how a public-private partnership can work.

A collaboration between the church, Landmark Columbus and the Heritage Fund — The Community Foundation of Bartholomew County raised $161,000. Heritage Fund then raised another $17,000, including a significant contribution from the Columbus Area Visitors Center. And Kenny Glass donated $25,000 worth of glass that was installed for the project.

The successful collaboration fixed a significant problem to one of the city’s architectural treasures, and ensured that one of its unique elements will function as intended for many years to come.
