IUPUC hosts fall film series

IUPUC is hosting a fall film series at YES Cinema featuring classic films.

The series opens at 3 p.m. Monday with a free showing of “A Streetcar Named Desire,” which stars Marlon Brando and Vivien Leigh. The film, which debuted in 1951 and is adapted from the Pulitzer Prize-winning play by Tennessee Williams, launched Brando’s career. The film was nominated for 12 Academy Awards and won four, including best actress for Leigh.

The film is the first of several that are part of a special studies course on Tennessee Williams and film offered at IUPUC this fall.

“It’s really important for students to see these classic films in the way they were meant to be seen on the silver screen,” said Lisa Siefker-Bailey, who is teaching the class.

Other free film showings, all at 3 p.m. on the dates indicated, include:

Sept. 17: “Cat on a Hot Tin Roof,” starring Paul Newman and Elizabeth Taylor.

Oct. 29: “Summer and Smoke,” starring Laurence Harvey and Geraldine Page.

Nov. 19: “Baby Doll,” starring Eli Wallach and Carrol Baker.
