Jets topple Lancers following two-week layoff

HOPE — A Hauser boys tennis season that started out with promise has been done in by weather over the past two weeks.

The Jets, who opened the season with a 3-2 win at a much bigger school in Shelbyville, hadn’t played since then because of rainouts. But after 13 days off, they reaclimated themselves to competition Tuesday with a 4-1 Mid-Hoosier Conference win against Edinburgh.

“That (layoff) is unusual in a short tennis season,” Hauser coach John Pratt said. “I thought we played well. We’re a lot more inexperienced than we were last year, but we’re coming on.”

The two most competitive matches of the day came at No. 1 and No. 2 singles. Prior to that, the Jets (2-0, 1-0) had clinched the match by taking the other three spots.

Hauser’s Aaron Mee beat Travis Jones 6-1, 6-0 at No. 3 singles. The Jets’ Jacob Luken and Caleb Hoover topped Parker Newman and Koltan Reed 6-0, 6-3 at No. 1 doubles, and Tyler Moore and Keegan Miller blanked Trevor Moon and Isiah Estes 6-0, 6-0 at No. 2 doubles.

Hauser then added its fourth point when Sean Miller finished off a 6-2, 6-3 win against Brayden McManaway.

“Overall, we’re a young team, and this is just an example of what we can do this year,” Miller said. “We played well as a unit. Every spot has played pretty well.”

Not more than a minute after Miller’s match was finished, Edinburgh’s Coltan Henderson gave the Lancers (0-3, 0-1) their lone point when he completed a 6-3, 6-2 victory against Ethan Wallace.

“I’m so proud of my kids,” Edinburgh coach Pete Khensouri said. “They work so hard for me, and I’m seeing progress right now. I’m happy with their progress my No. 1 doubles has been making. They do much better every day.”
