Santa Express tickets go on sale Monday

Tickets for one of Jennings County’s most popular Christmas-season events go on sale Monday.

The 12th Annual Hulda’s Santa Express is planned for about 9 a.m. to about 4 p.m. Nov. 17. The 30-minute ride aboard a Madison Railroad train will take riders from North Vernon along the ridge over the Mascatatuck River and on to Vernon.

“We always have the Santa Express train rides on the Saturday before Thanksgiving,” Bill Reichenbach, one of the organizers, said.

The rides include a visit from Santa Claus and Christmas carols.

Reichenbach said one more train car is being added this year, which will make room for extra passengers. However, he said he still expects the rides to sell out just as they do every year.

The train will have room for 140 people on each of the nine rides, which begin at 9:15 a.m. and go every 45 minutes until about 4 p.m., Reichenbach said.

Additional changes include:

The ticket price of $5 for adults, children and infants, an increase from the $3 price in previous years

Train cars will be assigned

A caboose will not be part of the train this year

Another activity during the day, Reichenbach said, is a free showing of the film “Polar Express” at 2 p.m. at the Park Theatre Civic Centre, 25 N. Madison Ave., in North Vernon.
