East band captures gold in ISSMA invitational

The Columbus East High School marching band received a gold award at the Indiana State School Music Association scholastic preliminaries open class invitational on Saturday.

The Columbus East Olympian Spirit marching band competed in the invitational at Whiteland Community High School in Scholastic Class A and was among nine bands in that division. It now heads to the ISSMA scholastic finals Oct. 20 at Lawrence Center High School.

“We had the best performance of the year,” said David Rodgers, East band director. “We were very pleased and performed well.”

Rodgers said there are a few minor improvements that need to be made going into the scholastic finals.

“It’s at the point in the season that every point counts,” he said. “We felt really good with what we put out (there).”

The Sound of North marching band, which had last weekend off, will compete at 7:14 p.m. Saturday during the ISSMA regional competition at Center Grove High School in Greenwood.
