Alleged shoplifting leads to local man’s arrest

A Bartholomew County man was arrested after being accused of leaving a Columbus store without paying for merchandise valued at more than $2,100.

At about 1:45 a.m. Tuesday, Columbus Police Department officer Trenton Browning was dispatched to 735 Whitfield Drive on a report of a man acting suspiciously while inside the east side department store, said Lt. Matt Harris, department spokesman.

Store employees said that they confronted the man — later identified as Dustin R. Jessie, 29, of 7120 N. County Road 250E in Columbus — after he attempted to push a shopping cart full of merchandise out of the store without paying for it.

Jessie ran from the employees and exited the store, where he was arrested by Browning a short time later, Harris said.

Store employees determined that the value of items stolen was $2,166.

Jessie was transported to the Bartholomew County Jail and booked on a preliminary charge of theft, a Level 6 Felony. He was being held in lieu of $7,500 bond, jail officials said.
