State receives federal grant for I-65 improvements

INDIANAPOLIS — The Indiana Department of Transportation has received two $20 million federal grants to fund projects to expand and rehabilitate I-65, including a section between State Road 58 and State Road 46 in Bartholomew County.

In addition to the local project, which is widening I-65 to three lanes between the Seymour and Columbus exits, the money will also be used to add lanes between State Road 32 and State Road 47 in Boone County, state officials said.

Existing pavement is being replaced and bridges are being repaired in both projects, state officials said.

The grants, entitled Better Utilizing Investments to Leverage Development (BUILD), are being used to support the 1.5 billion tons of freight and millions of people who rely on Indiana’s interstate system each year, according to Gov. Eric J. Holcomb’s office. Freight movement on Indiana’s interstates is expected to grow by 60 percent in the next 30 years, the governor’s office reported.
