Bull Dogs down Owls for fourth straight win

SEYMOUR — Columbus North’s girls basketball team is still streaking going into Thursday’s tilt at Columbus East.

Turning defense to offense, the Bull Dogs extended extended their winning spree to four games Tuesday. They held Seymour to 29 percent shooting from the field, while also causing 21 turnovers, in a 46-26 rout.

North led 8-4 behind a pair of 3-pointers from Nadia Lomax, before the Owls strung together a 9-0 scoring streak in the final 1:42 of the opening eight minutes to lead 13-8.

The Bull Dogs opened the second quarter on a 10-0 scoring run, thanks in part to five points by Alexa McKinley, prompting an Seymour timeout with the score at 18-13 with 4:34 left in the half.

The teams traded the next four baskets before the Bull Dogs closed the half on a 6-1 mini-run. At the buzzer, Tessa Lomax hit a jumper from the free throw line to extend the North lead to 28-10.

"Things are starting to come together," Tessa Lomax said. "We are starting to figure out what works for us and what roles we all have. I think the team chemistry has gotten better and has made a big difference."

Both teams had 11 field-goal attempts in the second quarter, with the Bull Dogs (7-3) making nine and the Owls (6-6) hitting two.

North continued to dominate in the third quarter, scoring 10 unanswered points through the first 4:15 of the second half. Four different players scored in that span.

Seymour got its first points of the second half on a layup by Grace Meyer, with 3:25 on the clock. However, the basket proved to be the only one for the Owls in the period. Going into the final eight minutes of play, the Bull Dogs led 38-20.

North coach Pat McKee was able to empty his bench with a little less than two minutes left in the game.

Seymour finished 10 for 35 shooting from the field, while the Bull Dogs shot 50 percent at 19 for 38.

"I think that the defensive effort was pretty good. We paid attention to who could score, and we shut them down," McKinley said. "I think we have been really good defensively, and have learned to play with each other. We kind of player-identified."

McKinley topped the Bull Dogs with 15 points, and Nadia Lomax chipped in 12. North won the rebounding battle 25-15 and had 11 turnovers to 15 for the Owls.

Ashton Chase led Seymour with 16 points. No other Owls player scored more than four points.
