MALE

Sam Russell, Columbus North senior swimmer

Russell won the 100-yard butterfly and 100 breaststroke and swam on two winning relay teams in a 133-52 win against Columbus East. On Saturday, he swam on four winning relay teams in the Columbus North Relays.

His performance last week: “I think as a team, we had a lot of fun racing. It’s always fun to race your friends that I swim Donner with go to a different high school, but individually, I had some times that were close to what I had gone before and sectional times, so I was happy with.”

Do you do anything special to prepare? “The one thing that I really try to do, and it’s great for the team atmosphere is, I try to make sure everyone is having fun on the pool deck. We like to keep everything in a fun atmosphere.”

Favorite drink: “Blue Powerade”

Favorite food: “Barbecue boneless wings”

Favorite book: “The Big Debt Crisis”

Favorite class: “AP Government”

Role model: “My grandparents (Bill and Nan Russell and Peter and Mary Samuels)”

Best advice: “Always go into everything you do with a positive attitude.”

Athletics goal: “To keep on improving times. I’d like to be well below a minute in the 100 breaststoke.”

If you could travel anywhere: “Antarctica, because it’s somewhere different, and not many people witness something of that landscape.”

FEMALE

Destiney Ramey, Edinburgh junior basketball player

Ramey led the Lancers with 30 points Saturday in a 56-48 win at Milan. Earlier in the week, she scored 19 points in a 59-43 loss to Greenwood Christian Academy and 24 points in a 95-18 win at Eminence.

Her performance last week: “I thought we all did pretty well. It wasn’t just me that did all of the work. We passed the ball around to get shots.”

Do you do anything special to prepare? “I usually go out there and shoot and warm up and stretch before games.”

Favorite drink: “Blue Gatorade”

Favorite food: “Steak”

Favorite book: “A Child Called ‘It’”

Favorite class: “Anatomy”

Role model: “Steph Curry”

Best advice: “To never give up. Always try hard and go hard in games and be ourselves on the court.”

Athletics goal: “To get 1,000 (career) points. That was my main goal as a freshman to get my 1,000 points so I can be up on the board.”

If you could travel anywhere: “Australia, because I’d like to see all of the animals and just to go out there and explore.”
