East swimmers sweep Cubs on senior night

Columbus East celebrated senior night in style Thursday by rolling to easy wins against Madison.

The Olympian boys cruised to a 111-63 victory. The East girls also dominated in a 133-40 rout.

"Being a senior, you want to come out and win for your team," East senior Ryan Singer said. "It was all about fun tonight. It was my last time swimming a home meet in this pool, so it’s nice to get a few wins out of it."

Singer led the boys team by winning the 200-yard individual medley in 2 minutes, 10.91 seconds and the 100 butterfly in 59.81. Zach Statler won the 200 freestyle (2:01.03), DJ Rhodes took the diving competition (186.20), Mason Curry captured the 500 freestyle (5:42.68) and Bryce Eckelman won the 100 backstroke (1:04.58).

The Olympians also swept the 200 medley (1:49.42), 200 freestyle (1:38.14) and 400 freestyle (3:54.78) relays.

"You could see the fatigue, and that impacted them not lowering their times," East boys coach Dave Fribley said. "The kids were about where they have been. The mind wanted to go faster, but the body fatigue wouldn’t let them do it."

Junior Jennifer Utterback led the girls with wins in the the 200 freestyle (2:07.13) and 100 backstroke (1:10.70). Other individual winners for the Olympians were Maggie Johnson in the 200 IM (2:22.51), Emily Walker in diving (114.60), Karissa Miller in the 500 freestyle (5:56.86), Elizabeth Proffitt in the 500 freestyle and Marin Wieneke in the 100 breaststroke (1:16.03).

"A majority of them made best times, which was awesome," Utterback said. "We had a fun time. It was senior night, so we were all celebrating our seniors. Our seniors did really good. We put in the work, and I think we’ll be ready for conference to blast it out."

East, which will compete in the Hoosier Hills Conference girls meet Saturday at Floyd Central, also had wins from its 200 medley (2:04.48), 200 freestyle (1:47.33) and 400 freestyle (4:07.52) relay teams.

"I think it was a good night for our seniors," East girls coach Jill Arnholt said. "I’m really proud of them and really appreciate the job they’ve done this year. You can’t just win events, you have to get seconds and thirds, and that’s where those girls come into play — all five of them. They came through and were great leaders this season, and I’m going to miss them."
