State police investigating 2 CPD officers

Indiana State Police detectives are investigating two Columbus Police officers who were accused last year of working secondary jobs during hours that they also were working as law enforcement officers.

An internal Columbus Police Department investigation began in September after a report was made to the police department, said Lt. Matt Harris, Columbus Police Department spokesman.

On Nov. 29, as a result of the internal investigation, Lt. Dan Meister, a 22-year veteran of the department, took a position of patrol officer, Harris said. He no longer has supervisory responsibilities with the department, according to Harris.

Meister is assigned to non-law enforcement roles with the department at the current time, Harris said.

Columbus Police Officer Ron May, a 31-year veteran of the department, on Nov. 29 announced his intention to retire effective in May, Harris said.

Due to accumulated vacation and severance, May has not been working in law enforcement for the department since Nov. 29, according to Harris.

The department is prohibited by state law to reveal the results of its internal investigation, according to Harris.

Columbus police turned over the allegations to the Indiana State Police last year and CPD does not know the status or timeline of that investigation, Harris said.

Sgt. Stephen Wheeles, Indiana State Police Versailles Post spokesman, said he had very limited knowledge of the case, but did confirm that detectives from the Versailles Post were referred a matter from the Columbus Police Department and are investigating.
