Services and studies

First Presbyterian — Worship begins at 9:30 a.m. Sunday at the church, 512 Seventh St., Columbus. The church will remember the baptism of Jesus, and we reaffirm the baptismal covenant with God. The sermon, “Water and Spirit,” will be based on Matthew 3:1-17. Following the service, there will be an annual congregational meeting, where the church will give thanks for the work God has done in the past year.

Infant and toddler care is available from 9:15 a.m. to noon Sunday.

The men’s and women’s support groups meet at 7 a.m. Fridays, and a second men’s support group of working-age men meets every Monday at 6:15 a.m.

People in need of a meal are invited to Hot Meals, offered 5 p.m. Friday, with entry through the glass doors on Franklin Street.

The church is LGBTQ-friendly, open and affirming to all.

Garden City Church of Christ A new sermon series, “I Can Only Imagine,” starts at 10 a.m. Sunday and will continue for four Sunday services through Feb. 3 at the church, 3245 Jonesville Road, Columbus.

Pastor Brian Gilroy will deliver the message of God’s grace and forgiveness. In addition, six Connection groups are meeting for deeper discussion and application during the series. These groups meet at various times throughout the week and at different locations. One will be a ladies-only group. Call the church office at 812-372-1766 with questions or to sign up.

A movie will be shown at 7 p.m. Feb. 8. Tickets are free, but required and available at the church office.

First United Methodist — At Sunday’s 9 a.m. Traditional Service and 10 a.m. Celebration Service, the Rev. Howard Boles will deliver the message “Starting the Year Well: Quiet Confidence” at the church, 618 Eighth St., Columbus. The scripture will be Isaiah 43:1-7 and Luke 3:15-17, 21-22.

Sunday school for all ages begins at 10:10 a.m.

Childcare is available during both services.

On Sunday, Jan. 13, there will be an all-church meeting, beginning with a light meal at 5 p.m. and then a time of sharing at 6 p.m. There will be committee updates on their work in 2018 and their aspirations for 2019. There will also be updates on the capital campaign and the progress toward completing the projects on the list. Don’t miss this great opportunity to celebrate where the church has been and share goals for the coming year.

Flintwood Wesleyan — The Amplify non-traditional service is 9 a.m. Sunday and Sunday School classes are at 10 a.m. The Well traditional service is at 11 a.m. Both Amplify and The Well are held in the main sanctuary. They will be led by Rev. Wes Jones, senior pastor. The Prayer Team will meet at 8 a.m. Sunday School classes meet in their regular rooms at the church, located at 5300 E. 25th St., Columbus. Choir practice is at 5 p.m. followed by an evening service at 6 p.m. in the Sanctuary.

“In The Beginning,” a small-group Bible study is at 6:30 p.m. on Tuesday in The Friendship Center. It is studying the book of Genesis.

On Wednesday there will be a supper at 5:30 p.m., followed by GLOW at 6:15 p.m.

The Prayer Team at 6:15 p.m. in The Prayer Room. Youth meets at 6:30 p.m. and adult Bible study meets at 7 p.m. in the sanctuary.

Grace Lutheran — At the 8 and 10:30 a.m. worship services, Rev. John Armstrong will be will bringing the message at the church, 3201 Central Ave. Children’s Sunday School is at 9:30 a.m.

International Friendship Center at Grace will host “Super Bowl Saturday” from 9 to 11:30 a.m today.

“Forward with Grace” will be conducted at 9:30 a.m. Sunday. This program is part of the Synodical Re:Vitality Outreach Project. Participants will discover opportunities of service and involvement.

The Alpha Course: an intro to Christian ideas, continues from 6 to 7:30 p.m. Tuesday. All are welcome. Please contact the church for child care needs.

Dave Ramsey’s Financial Peace University will be conducted at Grace on Sundays from 3 to 5 p.m. starting in January. Please contact the office for registration information.

Old Union United Church of Christ — On the first Sunday after Epiphany, the sermon for Sunday’s 10 a.m. service is “Dangerous Waters,” with text from Isaiah 43:1-7, Acts 8:14-17, and Luke 3:15-17, 21-22. The church is located at 12703 N. County Road 50W, Edinburgh.

Sunday school will begin at 9 a.m., followed by fellowship at 9:40 a.m.

Wednesday Bible study will resume at 6 p.m. Wednesday.

Petersville United Methodist — At the 9 a.m. worship service on Sunday, the Rev. Stormy Scherer-Berry will deliver the message, “Baptism,” at the church, 2781 N. County Road 500E, Columbus. The Scripture is Luke 3:15-17, 21-22 and Isaiah 43:1-7, and will be shared by the liturgist, Joe Bush. The choir will provide special music and Teresa Covert will give the children’s sermon. A time of fellowship will follow the service.

For the next six months, the loose change offering will be directed to FISH, the food bank program at Love Chapel.

The Baker’s Dozen study group will meet at 6:30 p.m. on Monday at the home of Larry and Connie Nolting; the Journey study class will meet at the home of Chris Kimerling, also on Monday night at 6:30 p.m.

The Sit and Stitch group will meet at 6:30 p.m. Tuesday, also at the Nolting home. Choir practice is at 6:30 p.m. on Wednesday at the church, and Prayer Time will meet at 10 a.m. Thursday at the church, led by Barb Hedrick.

St. Paul Lutheran — At the 8 and 10 a.m. services, Pastor Doug Bauman will present his sermon, ”You Are…,” based on Isaiah 43:1-7. The church is located at 2555 S. County Road 300E, Columbus.

Pastor Jeff Patterson will be installed as associate pastor at the 10:45 a.m. service where, Daniel Brege, president of the Indiana District of the Lutheran Church — Missouri Synod, will officiate. Since the 10:45 a.m. service will be bilingual, there will be no Spanish service held in the chapel.

A reception honoring Pastor Patterson will be in the Fellowship Room beginning at 9 a.m. Brege will lead the Bible Class beginning at 9:30 a.m. All are invited to attend.

Scipio United Methodist — Scipio United Methodist and Elizabethtown United Methodist Churches will be having a very special speaker during the worship service on Sunday morning. Service time at Scipio United Methodist is 9 a.m. Service time at Elizabethtown United Methodist is 10:30 a.m.

Megan Bozell, from Columbus will be speaking. She has an amazing story of how God used tragedy in her life for her to minister and comfort many families in the area who have suffered from the same tragic experience. Megan is a teacher in the Bartholomew Consolidated School Corp., and her husband Kevin is a firefighter for the Columbus Fire Department.

Inviting friends, neighbors, co-workers and family is encouraged.

Unitarian Universalist At 10 a.m. on Sunday, the service will be titled “Racial Justice — From Paralysis to Commitment,” about the Racial Justice Team and Peggy Sabau. This Sunday the church will explore the recent work of the Racial Justice committee to bring hope and insight to everyone to act with courage and love. Please join in as we move closer to a world of equality for all.

Garden City Church of Christ Trail Life at GCCC, a Christian-based outdoor adventure for boys in kindergarten through eighth grade, will begin in February at Garden City Church of Christ, 3245 Jonesville Road, Columbus.
