Man arrested on drug-related charge after shoplifting call

A local man was arrested on multiple charges after he was accused of stealing items from a Columbus store and then attempting to flee from Columbus police officers.

CPD officers were sent to Walmart, 735 Whitfield Drive, at 7:15 p.m. Friday about a suspected shoplifter inside the store, said Lt. Matt Harris, Columbus Police Department spokesman.

The man, later identified as Dustin E. Howard, 31, of 442 Pearl St., attempted to  leave the store when he was stopped by officers, and then fled, Harris said. Howard was caught a short time later.

While searching Howard, officers recovered stolen merchandise from the store as well as a small amount of methamphetamine, Harris said.

Howard was arrested on preliminary charges of possession of methamphetamine, theft and resisting law enforcement, Harris said.
