Barn fire in county destroys antiques

Antiques were among the valuables lost when fire destroyed a pole barn west of the Woodside Industrial Park.

Located just off State Road 58 west of Interstate 65, the barn is owned by Jean Lawson, 7902 S. County Road 400W, said Southwest Volunteer Fire Department’s chief Billy Koons.

Nobody was injured during the Wednesday afternoon fire, Koons said.

When firefighters from Columbus Township Fire and Rescue arrived at 1:44 p.m. to assist Southwest volunteers, the 20- by 50-foot structure was already engulfed in flames, Columbus Township Fire Chief Dave Thompson said.

Koons estimates structural loss at about $40,000, while the destruction of antiques, lawn mowers and other items will likely total more than $10,000.

“It was a total loss,” Koons said.

Since the barn had no electricity, the fire chief says he has no idea what sparked the blaze, and the cause remains under investigation.

Only the owner and her son were home at the time the fire broke out, Koons said.
