East mauls Red Devils

JEFFERSONVILLE — Class 4A No. 5 Columbus East built a 17-0 lead after 4½ innings Friday night and posted a 17-3 victory at defending Hoosier Hills Conference champion Jeffersonville.

Dalton Back went 4 for 4 with a double and four RBIs, and Nash Murphy went 3 for 4 with a home run and four RBIs to lead a 17-hit attack for the Olympians (8-1). Clayton Taylor went 2 for 2, Jonah Wichman went 2 for 3 with three RBIs, Ben Major went 2 for 3 and Julian Greenwell went 2 for 4 with two RBIs.

Cole Gilley had two RBIs and allowed only one hit in four innings in picking up the win.

North rallies for win

WESTFIELD — Class 4A No. 8 Columbus North trailed 4-1 after 4½ innings before rallying for a 9-4 win against Libertyville (Illinois) in its opener of the Prep Baseball Report Midwest Select Tournament at Grand Park.

Blake Huffman’s three-run homer tied the game in the bottom of the fifth. The Bull Dogs (7-2) then took the lead with a five-run sixth, highlighted by a two-run double by Hayden McDaniel.

Grant Trinkle went 3 for 4, and Huffman finished with five RBIs for North. Adam Chapman pitched a scoreless sixth and seventh to pick up the win in relief of Jakob Meyer.

The Bull Dogs wrap up the tournament today with games against Portage Northern (Michigan) at 10:30 a.m. and Edwardsville (Illinois) at 2 p.m.

Jets rout Chargers

GREENSBURG — Trey Johnson took a perfect game into the fifth and settled for a one-hitter with seven strikeouts to lead Class A No. 5 Hauser to a 13-0, five-inning, Mid-Hoosier Conference win at North Decatur.

Jackson Paradise went 2 for 4 with three RBIs for the Jets (5-1, 4-0). Will Trotter had a triple and three RBIs, and Sean Miller and Johnson each had a double and two RBIs.

Lancers avenge loss

EDINBURGH — Edinburgh picked up its first win of the season and avenged Thursday’s home loss to South Decatur with a 14-4, five-inning MHC win at South Decatur.

Bryce Burton went 4 for 4 with two doubles and three RBIs, Coltan Henderson went 3 for 4, Zach Giles went 2 for 2 and Ethan Armel went 2 for 3 with three RBIs the Lancers (1-6, 1-3). Henderson threw a four-hitter.

Brogan Howard went 2 for 2 for the Cougars (1-4, 1-3).

Panthers blank Pirates

NORTH VERNON — Duncan Rowda and Josh Pettit combined on a seven-hit shutout to lead Jennings County to a 6-0 win against Greensburg.

Jacob Kirby went 2 for 2 for the Panthers (3-1).

Bull Dog wins Frosh Mile

INDIANAPOLIS — Columbus North’s Matt Newell won the boys Freshman Mile in 4 minutes, 40.07 seconds in Franklin Central’s Distance Showcase.

Reese Kilbarger-Stumpff finished third in 4:40.96 for the Bull Dogs. Evan Carr was 13th in 4:56.07.

In the “Miracle Mile,” the showcase’s featured event, North’s John Sluys finished 15th in 4:37.91, and Sam Horak took 77th in 4:43.32.

The Bull Dogs finished 11th in the 4×800-meter relay in 8:39.74. Brown County was 15th in 8:56.86.

Hauser takes second

HOPE — Hauser’s boys and girls both finished second behind Indianapolis Scecina in a tri meet.

The Crusaders won the boys meet with 70 points to 56 for the Jets and 23 for Fortune Academy. Scecina’s girls scored 81 points to 65 for Hauser and four for Fortune.

Ryan Ault led the Jet boys with wins in the 1,600 (5:03) and 3,200 (10:59). John Bragg took the high jump (5 feet, 8 inches), Joe Hunter captured the long jump (19-0) and Emils Vigants won the 400 (54.2).

Ashley Chambers won the high jump (4-4) and 400 (1:09), and Mel Hasler took the 300 hurdles (28.7) and 200 (28.7) to lead the Hauser girls. Grace Isley captured the 100 (13.3), Marnie Schwartzkopf won the 800 (2:37) and the Jets took the 4×400 relay (4:42).

Chargers top Jets

GREENSBURG — Hauser outhit North Decatur 15-13, but North Decatur handed the Jets an 8-5 MHC defeat.

Mykenzie Ault went 4 for 5 with a double, and Hannah Johnson went 3 for 4 with a double for the Jets (2-5, 1-3). Abby Branum went 2 for 2, Hunter Crain went 2 for 4 and Zoee Nading went 2 for 5.

Lancers run-rule Cougars

EDINBURGH — South Decatur was within 7-5 after two innings, but Edinburgh scored seven times in the third and four in the fourth to pull away for an 18-6, five-inning MHC win.

Taylor Littiken went 4 for 5 with three RBIs, Catey Streeval went 3 for 4 with two RBIs, Kaitlyn Bailey went 3 for 5 with a double and Sidney Beier had a grand slam homer and five RBIs for the Lancers (6-5, 3-1). Carly Cowen went 2 for 3 with a double and three RBIs, and Morgan Calhoun went 2 for 3.

Erynn Dyer went 2 for 2 with two RBIs, and Megan Manlief went 2 for 3 with three RBIs for the Cougars (0-6, 0-2). Madison Shields went 2 for 3.

Panthers remain perfect

HANOVER — Jennings County pulled out a pair of three-set wins to claim a 4-1 victory at Southwestern (Hanover).

Ellie Hearne beat Julia Worcester 6-2, 6-3 at No. 1 singles, and Reagan Brown downed Elle Ford 6-4, 4-6, 6-2 at No. 2 singles for the Panthers (5-0). Callie Wilder and Abigail DeCamp topped Ashlyn Cloud and Chloe Adcock 6-2, 6-1 at No. 1 doubles, and Courtney Lykins and Elizabeth Ertel beat Ally Voorhies and Audrey Bare 7-5, 4-6, 7-6 (4) at No. 2 doubles.

Jennings’ Carmen Kopitzke fell to Autumn Harmon 6-1, 6-0 at No. 3 singles.

Lancers down Fortune

EDINBURGH — Bladen Hancock won medalist honors with a 2-over-par 38 to lead Edinburgh to a 213-249 win against Fortune Academy at Timbergate.

Jordan Myers carded a 55, and Travis Jones added a 57 for the Lancers. Darius Bennett shot 63, and Parker Neumann had a 68.
