Philharmonic Youth Orchestra to perform

The Philharmonic Youth Orchestra, an education program of the Columbus Philharmonic, will present its spring concert at 6 p.m. Sunday at North Christian Church, 850 Tipton Lane.

The concert is free.

A strings-only performance of Soon Hee Newbold’s “A Knight’s Quest” will open the evening’s concert, followed by a John Williams Trilogy with music from “Star Wars” and “Jurassic Park.” A strings-only piece, Karl Jenkins’ “Palladio” will also be performed. The full orchestra will perform “Song of Jupiter,” “Variations on a Theme by “Handel,” “Crown Imperial Coronation March” and “Russian Chorale and Overture.”

While some orchestra students have been playing their instrument for years, others are relatively new musicians. Each semester, Columbus Indiana Philharmonic musicians join youth orchestra sectionals where each student works with a Philharmonic musician to work through the music and learn specific techniques. Musicians in the youth orchestra range from fourth graders to high school students.
