Jonesville shooting occurred after argument between two women

An argument between two women led to a shooting at a Jonesville home during the Memorial Day weekend.

Bartholomew County Sheriff deputies arrested Vicky E. Shade, 51, of 309 Jackson St., Jonesville, after the shooting was reported at that address at 12:36 p.m. Sunday. Shade was being held on preliminary charges of criminal recklessness and a court order in the Bartholomew County Jail, jail officials said. Her bond was set at $1,015,000.

The victim, Susan Tolbert, 49, who rented a room at 309 Jackson St., was released from an Indianapolis hospital after treatment for a gunshot wound to her side and through her arm, said sheriff’s department Capt. Chris Roberts, investigations commander.

Roberts said while Tolbert’s injuries were not life-threatening, she was “very lucky,” under the circumstances to have survived.

The gunshot wounds were caused by one round from a semi-automatic .25-caliber handgun, Roberts said.

When sheriff’s deputies and Indiana State Police arrived at the Jonesville address, Tolbert had already been taken to a Seymour hospital, Roberts said, and was subsequently transported by helicopter to an Indianapolis hospital for treatment.

Shade was in the house at the scene following the shooting, and when she left the residence she was detained by investigators, who at that time had not located the gun used in the shooting, Roberts said.

During the investigation, investigators did locate the gun, which was owned by Shade, Roberts said.

The shooting happened inside the Jackson Street home and investigators are still trying to determine what led up to the incident, Roberts said.

Investigators have learned that Shade had moved into the home recently — Tolbert had been renting a room there prior to the time Shade moved in, Roberts said.

An argument ensued between the two women prior to the shooting and the gun went off, Roberts said. Investigators said there is no indication of any connection between the two women other than living in the same residence.

“We are still looking at what the argument may have been over,” Roberts said.

Investigators are not expecting to make any further arrests in the case, Roberts said.

Formal charges against Shade had not yet been filed Wednesday, although Bartholomew County Prosecutor Bill Nash said because the shooting occurred over a holiday weekend, the office has 72 hours to file formal charges against Shade.
