‘Drive Sober’ enforcement continuing through Labor Day

The Bartholomew County Sheriff’s Department and the Columbus Police Department are joining about 230 law enforcement agencies around Indiana in a “Drive Sober or Get Pulled Over” effort.

From mid-August through Labor Day, police will be working overtime to arrest impaired drivers and motorists should expect to see an increase in sobriety checkpoints, roving and saturation patrols.

A driving while intoxicated arrest may mean going to jail and losing a driver’s license. State officials estimate the average cost of a conviction to the driver is about $10,000, including the costs of car towing and repairs, attorney fees, fines, court costs, lost work time and other expenses.

These overtime patrols are supported through the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration funding through the Indiana Criminal Justice Institute.
