Former deputy and her brother arrested after domestic disturbance

A former Bartholomew County Sheriff’s deputy was arrested along with her brother after a domestic dispute involving someone being shot was reported on Sunday.

Sheriff deputies were called at 11 p.m. Sunday to 2905 S. Lake Drive after a 911 call of a domestic disturbance involving an individual who had been shot.

When deputies arrived, they located a female, Hannah Tamer Bowman, 37, who lived at the Lake Drive address, who is a former sheriff’s deputy.

Bowman told deputies she had shot her husband during an altercation while he was sitting inside her vehicle, deputies said.

The husband, age 49, did have injuries to his shoulder but refused medical treatment, deputies said. He is not cooperating with authorities at this time, deputies said.

As the investigation continued, Bowman’s brother, Jonathan A. Lawburgh, 35, 7965 W. County Road 600N, Scipio, showed up at the residence and, at one point, started to fight with investigating deputies and other first responders, deputies said.

After the physical altercation occurred, Lawburgh was detained and now faces preliminary charges of battery on a public safety official (two counts), obstruction of justice, disorderly conduct and resisting law enforcement. He has since been released on bond, deputies said.

Evidence at the scene matched statements given by Bowman, deputies said. Alcohol was present at the scene.  Bowman admitted to consuming alcoholic beverages prior to the incident and tested .215 on a portable breath test, deputies said.

After all the evidence and statements were taken, Bowman was arrested on a preliminary charge of criminal recklessness with a deadly weapon.

Bowman had been employed as a merit deputy sheriff by the Bartholomew County Sheriff’s Department from April 9, 2007 to Nov. 20, 2009, when she resigned, deputies said. She has had no affiliation with BCSO since that time, deputies said.

Bowman was being held in the Bartholomew County Jail in lieu of $10,000 bond.

Detective Will Kinman is the investigating detective. Bartholomew County road deputies, Indiana State Police and Elizabethtown Fire Department assisted at the scene.
