The Bartholomew County Sheriff Department has impounded voting machines from the recent city election in Columbus pending a recount in the District 1 council race.
Bartholomew County Sheriff’s Captain Dave Steinkoenig sealed the voting machines in a secure location on Wednesday.
Bartholomew Superior Court 1 Judge James Worton ordered the voting machines to be impounded pending a recount for the District 1 race in which incumbent Republican Dascal Bunch lost to Democratic challenger Jerone Wood by one vote.
A hearing is set in Superior Court 1 at 3:30 p.m. Tuesday before Worton about the recount, according to the court.
Bartholomew County Clerk Jay Phelps said it is likely that Worton will make a determination during the hearing about how and when to proceed with the recount.
Recounts in Indiana involving electronic voting machines are done by reprinting the vote tallies on the machines and comparing them to the number of signatures on the poll books, Phelps said. Mail-in ballots are recounted by hand.
