Pedestrian in critical condition after accident

Staff reports

Crash reconstructionists from the Columbus Police Department are investigating an accident that left a pedestrian seriously injured on Friday night.

Officers were sent to the 2400 block of Beam Road about a pedestrian being hit by a minivan just before 9 p.m. Friday, said Lt. Matt Harris, Columbus Police Department spokesman.

After arriving at the scene, the officers located the pedestrian, Joshua Chaplin, 43, of Columbus, who was breathing but unresponsive, Harris said.

The officers spoke with the driver of the minivan, Vanessa E. Brookes, 16, of Columbus. Brookes advised officers that she was traveling north on U.S. 31 when Chaplin reportedly walked out into the road in front her from the sidewalk, Harris said.

Chaplin was transported to Indiana University Health Methodist Hospital for treatment of serious injuries to his head and legs and remains in critical condition, according to the hospital.
