East rallies past Cubs

MADISON — Columbus East came back from a 24-8 deficit midway through the second quarter to post its seventh win in the past eight games, a 64-59 Hoosier Hills Conference decision at Madison.

“It was just a heck of a comeback and shows you how far we’ve come as a young team,” East coach Danny Brown said. “We’re playing really good basketball right now. We’re playing our best basketball of the year, and it’s a good time to do it.”

The Olympians (14-7, 5-2) cut the deficit to 31-18 at halftime and 40-38 after three quarters before taking the lead in the final period.

Led by the post defense of Gabby Dean, East held the Cubs’ Jade Nutley, who had scored 28 points against the Olympians last year, to three.

“We had to switch defenses and chase them and went man-to-man, and this time it worked,” Brown said. “Gabby did a great job inside, and Whit (Rankin) did another great job on the defensive end. Then, we played with more of a sense of urgency in the second half.”

Dean also led the East offense, scoring 20 points on 9 of 11 shooting from the field, to go along with seven rebounds and three blocks. Koryn Greiwe added 16 points and Rankin had 10 points. Saige Stahl grabbed 13 rebounds, and Leah Bachmann added nine rebounds.

The win allows the Olympians to finish third in the HCC, one game behind co-champions Jeffersonville and Bedford North Lawrence.

“It was a big win for us because we finished third in the conference,” Brown said. “With this young a team, to finish third in the conference is quite an accomplishment.”
