Jackson County suspect caught after trying to escape in river

SEYMOUR — Jackson County Sheriff deputies arrested Jeremy S. Dillman, 36, of Medora on a felony warrant Thursday afternoon after Dillman attempted to escape into the White River.

Deputies with the Jackson County Sheriff’s Department received information that Dillman was in the 1600 block East of County Road 300N, in the Shieldstown area.

Sheriff Rick Meyer, Chief Deputy Dustin Steward, Lt. Adam Nicholson, Sgt. Ben Rudolph, and Deputy Brad Barker went to that location and located a vehicle Dillman had reportedly been driving. Dilliman, however, was not located.

Barker located footprints that lead West from the residence along the White River bank. Barker followed the footprints while the other officers checked the surrounding residences for Dillman.

Barker advised the other officers that he had located Dillman hiding along the river bank about ¼ mile West of the original address. As Barker attempted to take Dillman into custody, Dillman fled and jumped into the White River. Dillman swam approximately 15-20 feet into the White River and held on to a log.

Boat rescue was requested from Conservation, and Brownstown Fire Department. Brownstown Fire arrived with their Hovercraft boat and took Deputy Barker to where Dillman was holding onto the log. Deputy Barker was able to successfully apprehend Dillman and put him on the Hovercraft.

Dillman was checked out by the Jackson County Ambulance Service and transported to Schneck Medical Center ER and evaluated for hypothermia. Dillman was released from the ER and transported to the Jackson County Jail.

Dillman’s warrant was for Domestic Battery in the presence of a child which is a Level 6 Felony. Dillman is also being charged with Resisting Law Enforcement a class A misdemeanor.

Also assisting at the scene were Deputy Clint Burcham, Brownstown Police Department and the Indiana State Police.
