Filing ends for May primary

With the filing deadline now passed, Hoosiers will have a choice of nine Democrats running for president of the United States on Indiana’s primary ballot.

Representatives of Michael Bloomberg, Pete Buttigieg, Tulsi Gabbard, Elizabeth Warren and Andrew Yang filed the necessary paperwork in just the past few days in Indianapolis with the Indiana Secretary of State’s office.

Four Democrats who filed earlier were Joe Biden, Amy Klobuchar, Bernie Sanders and Tom Steyer.

Earlier, it was announced that incumbent U.S. President Donald Trump will be challenged on the Republican primary ballot by Bill Weld, who ran as Libertarian Gary Johnson’s running mate in the 2016 presidential election.

Two Democrats will be competing this spring for the opportunity to challenge Sixth District congressman Greg Pence. George T. Holland filed his candidacy on Wednesday, enabling him to compete against Jeannine Lee Lake for the Democratic Party’s nomination.

Holland is an 85-year-old retiree from Rushville who has twice run for Congress. He was a Democratic candidate in 1988, and ran again as a Libertarian in 2008.

Unlike recent county-wide elections, there were few last-minute filings at the courthouse in Columbus, Bartholomew County election supervisor Shari Lentz said.

Dan J. Arnholt, who retired as top administrator of Bartholomew County REMC a few years ago, is the third Republican running for county commissioner in District 3.

He’ll compete against JoAnne Flohr and Tony London for votes in May to be his party’s nominee for the seat now occupied by Rick Flohr, who chose not to seek re-election.

The only other candidate who has filed in the past few days is a Democrat — incumbent Jonesville Clerk-Treasurer Terry L. Barnhart. Lentz noted that nobody has filed to run for the Jonesville Town Council.

With the deadline now passed, several candidates will be running without primary competition that include Indiana Gov. Eric Holcomb (R); District 44 State Senator Eric A. Koch (R); District 1 Bartholomew County Commissioner Larry Kleinhenz (R); Bartholomew County Coroner Clayton Nolting (R); Bartholomew County Surveyor E.R. Gray; Hartsville Clerk-Treasurer Tresa K. Meier (R), Hope Town Council member Ed Johnson (D-Ward 1) and Hope Town Council member Ohmer Miller (R-Ward 3).

If any candidate changes his or her mind and decides not to run, they have to file a withdrawal of candidacy by noon Monday.

Voter registration will end on Monday, April 6, while the first day of early voting will be Tuesday, April 7.

Although no more names can be added to Bartholomew County’s ballot until after the May primary, Republicans or Democrats can select a candidate to fill a vacancy on the general election ballot if no one was nominated from their party during the primary.

But those names must be submitted no later than the end of June.
