Two Flames teams bring home championships

Two Columbus Flames hockey teams captured championships in two different states last weekend.

The Mite Flames went 6-1-3 in the President’s Day Classic in Cincinnati. They beat Nashville Youth Hockey League Mite All Stars 5-2, Lexington 6-0, Knoxville Junior Ice Bears B 2-1 and Jr Havoc B 6-0; fell to Knoxville Junior Ice Bears A 2-0 and tied the Junior Havoc All Stars 1-1, TPH Red 3-3 and Nashville Flyers 0-0 in pool play; then beat the Nashville Youth Hockey League All Stars 4-1 in the semifinals and the Jr Havoc All Stars 3-1 in the final.

Brooks Larsh netted 10 goals and six assists over the weekend. Thomas King added five goals and five assists, Carter Harris had four goals and three assists, Maddox Coy scored five goals, Jack Sargent notched two goals and two assists, Bentley Hampton and Keaton Grube each tallied two goals and one assist, Logan Barringer had 3 assists and Hallie Mudd and Robby Orgass each added one assist. Cayden Long played goalie all 10 games, recording three shutouts and an 89.4 save percentage.

The Flames 10U A2-Kareus Squirts Orange team won the Three Rivers Cup in Pittsburgh, falling to the Loudoun Nforcers (Virginia) 8-4, beating Wheeling Jr Nailers (West Virginia) 5-3, tied Mentor (Ohio) 2-2 before beating the Wheeling Jr. Nailers 5-3 for the 10U Lower A2 Championship. Defensemen Kai Bergmann won tournament MVP honors, and hard working hustle game awards went to Kai Bergmann, Carter Kareus, Ryan McGhehey, John Tuttle and Tsukasa Udo.

Drew Moenssen led the Squirts with six goals. Ryan McGhehey netted four goals and two assists, Tsukasa Udo scored two goals, Aaron Warble added one goal and two assists, Jackson Schneider and Henry Jamerson each had one goal and one assist, Carter Kareus scored one goal, Kai Bergmann and Noah Doig each had two assists and John Tuttle and Holden Thompson each added one assist. Hudsom Beckom was in net with a save percentage of 40.0.

Icemen host ‘Heroes’ tourney

The Columbus Icemen Varsity hosted its Hockey for Heroes Tournament last weekend. The Icemen lost to Hamilton Southeastern A 7-0, Icemen beat HSE B 5-1 and lost to Evansville 5-3 and Northern Kentucky 6-1.

Evan Federle led the Icemen with three goals. Ty Boone  netted two goals and one assist; Brayson Bennett added one goal and four assists and Caleb McGhehey, Joe Neal and Andrew Clark all had one goal and one assist. Jacob McMullen played one game with a save percentage of 75.86, Cam Stattenfield played two games with a save percentage of 85.42 and Evan Kuzman played one game with a save percentage of 73.68.

Peewee B wins twice

Peewee B beat the South Indy Sharks 8-0 and 6-3 lastg weekend.

Tyson Tyner led the team with four goals and three assists. Vaughn Moenssen netted three goals and three assists, Cole Finney added three goals and one assist, John Warble had one goal and two assists, Kaitlyn Netser notched one goal and one assist, River Degner and Philip Mattern each scored one goal, Ashton Nguyen had two assists and Giffin Mudd and Jonah Young each added one assist.

Bantams split pair

The Flames Bantams won 2-1 and lost 5-3 against Louisville A4.

Alex Clark led the Bantams with four goals. Tristan Tyner netted one goal and one assist; Dane Weinzapfel had two assists and Barrett Mudd, Zach Goggins, Jack Warble and Jadan Pagan all added one assist. Ben Blanz was in net.

12U-Nelson goes 0-4

The Columbus Flames 12U-Nelson team competed in the Written In Stone Tournament in Evansville. The squad the Owensboro (Kentucky) Puck Hogs 1-1, lost to Meramac Sharks (Missouri) 1-0 and Nashville Flyers 2-0 before falling to the Meramac Sharks 4-1 in a consolation game.

Bryce McDonald and Wyatt Warner scored goals for Peewee B. Eduardo Aranda and Carson King each had an assist.

BROOMBALL

Semifinals are set

Semifinal pairings are set for the Columbus Broomball League following the three first-round games last weekend.

Top-seed Monsters of Rock, which received a first-round bye, will play No. 4 CCA at 4:30 p.m., and No. 2 Vagabonds will face No. 3 Toyota Tsunamis at 5:30 p.m. March 1.

No. 6 Hansons will face No. 7 Jennings County BC in a consolation game at 6:30 p.m. March 1, with the winner to play No. 5 Our Name is Earl at 4:30 p.m. April 8. The third-place game will be at 5:30 p.m. April 8, followed by the championship at 6:30 p.m.

Vagabonds advanced with an 8-0 first-round win against Jennings County BC. Ricky Hooten netted four goals, and Ryan Ingalls and Josh D’Anna each added two.

Toyota Tsunamis topped Hansons 5-1 behind two goals from Todd Houchin and one each from Matt Street, Clayton McNealy and Jimmy Robertson. Matt Psota scored the goal for Hansons.

CCA beat Our Name Is Earl 8-1. Max Warr netted four goals for CCA, with Dave Dickinson and Scott Herron each adding two. Emily Anderson had the goal for Earl.

Panthers top Spartans

Jennings County posted an 88-33 win against Northside on Tuesday.

Winning for the Panthers were Dasen Murphy (75 pounds) Zac King (85), Lane Kirchner (95) Andrew Burton (105), Brathan Malone (110), Clayton Fields (115), Jonah Mathews (120), Elijah Hatton (125), RJ Barberis (130), Peyton Wild (135), Ean Schafer (140), Robin Stayton (165) Xavior Girdhart (185), Jacobi Clark 200) and Derrek Hawkins (262).
