In the face of a challenge, Americans always unite as one

The America we know and love feels different right now. Students are home. Streets are quiet. Businesses have been forced to close their doors, and our booming economy is now in the midst of an unprecedented challenge.

The coronavirus pandemic continues to pose a real threat to our health and our livelihoods. In these trying times, uncertainty abounds and anxiety is understandable.

In this moment of turbulence, let us never forget that we are all in it together. Every American has a role to play in defeating the virus.

Doctors, nurses, first responders and healthcare professionals whose care and compassion is unparalleled are on the front lines of this battle. Public safety officials are working around the clock to slow the spread of the disease. Scientists are putting their expertise to work in developing treatments to save lives.

Our farmers, producers, suppliers and delivery workers are keeping our shelves stocked and our families fed.

While many of us have been called upon to stay home, that has not stopped the acts of kindness that reminds us all of what truly matters — family, friends and faith.

It is heartwarming to hear of families celebrating birthdays and friends enjoying game nights by video or a church offering its congregation services over the internet. I am thankful for communities that have rallied behind the small businesses which bolster our economy.

Leadership is the key that guides us through troubling times. President Trump continues to guide our nation with resolve, science and the facts. His example continues to instill confidence in the American people when we’ve needed it the most.

Gov. Holcomb has been a beacon of leadership for our home state of Indiana. Hoosiers appreciate his dedication.

I’d like to also recognize Vice President Mike Pence, leader of the Coronavirus Task Force, and my brother. We are blessed to have such leaders as him guiding our state and our nation through this trying time.

For our part, I am proud that Congress came together to pass, on an overwhelming and bipartisan basis, the CARES Act. This legislation provides historic levels of relief and support for hospitals, families, workers and small businesses. I supported the CARES Act because it will help families to pay their bills and put food on the table. It will also help ensure that working Americans have a job to return to when our economy is up and running again.

As every American comes together in these difficult times, rest assured that we will defeat coronavirus.

Life will once again return to normal. Our economy will come roaring back. Businesses will reopen. America will get back to work.

I urge you to take comfort in the fact that in the midst of a global pandemic, this generation of Americans, like each of those before us, can still come together in a national moment of need. For the good of the country, we can still put aside our differences and unite as Americans.

So keep playing your part in the fight against coronavirus. Give thanks, grace and support to those who need it. And be confident that together, we will see this great nation through to the better days that lie ahead.

God Bless.
