Indianapolis airport adding nonstop flights to Cancun, Memphis

INDIANAPOLIS — Indianapolis International Airport is getting new nonstop flights to Cancun and to Memphis.

American Airlines announced Tuesday morning that it plans to offer its first seasonal, nonstop flight out of Indianapolis to Cancun, beginning Dec. 19.

And, starting Oct. 1, Delta Air Lines will offer a daily nonstop flight from Indianapolis to Memphis, Tennessee–a route that hasn’t been offered from Indianapolis since 2015.

The Cancun flights will depart on Saturdays from Dec. 19 through April 3. Tickets are already on sale.

“Our airline partners watch the trends and know the market demand, so this new American Airlines route is an encouraging first step in reviving international travel, and it’s the first time American has offered a flight from Indy to Cancun,” said Indianapolis Airport Authority Executive Director Mario Rodriguez in written remarks.

Memphis is a popular tourist city and home to FedEx’s largest hub, which gives the route an added benefit to FedEx employees in Indianapolis.

“We’ve been working for a while on a route to Memphis, and Delta had a close eye on the market trends and made it happen,” Rodriguez said.

Airport officials say Indiana has seen some rebound in air travel since the beginning of the pandemic, when most flights were grounded.

Southwest Airlines plans a new flight to St. Louis later this year. Spirit plans flights to Ft. Lauderdale, Florida, starting in November. And United plans to offer flights to Ft. Myers, Florida, beginning in December.
