Sheriff’s department announces death of former sheriff Rick Hill

All living former and current Bartholomew County Sheriffs gathered in 2009 to dedicate a display of a vintage John Dillinger-era Tommy gun purchased by the department in the mid-1930s for protection against John Dillinger and other bank robbers, who used high-powered firearms to rob banks during the Great Depression. Pictured, from left, back row, are: Charles Nolting (1963-1970), Michael Coy (1979-1982), Kenneth Whipker (1999-2006), and Mark Gorbett (2007-); and front row, Rick Hill (1987-1990), and David Mann (1991-1998). The Bartholomew County Sheriff’s Department said former sheriff Rick L. Hill has died.

Hill, 74, served as sheriff from 1987 to 1990. Arrangements are pending at Jewell Rittman Funeral Home in Columbus, the department said.

“Our most sincere condolences go to Rick’s wife, Lisa Hill, and all of the Hill family,” said Sheriff Matt Myers.

The sheriff’s department will be providing full honors for the service.
