Jail reports fake calls going out to families of inmates

COLUMBUS, Ind. — The Bartholomew County Jail is warning the general public that an imposter claiming to be a jail sergeant is calling relatives of jail inmates falsely claiming that the inmate has died.

No inmates have died, sheriff department officials said.

Although the calls appear to be coming from the jail, jail officials warn that you should not give out any personal information to the caller unless you are absolutely certain with whom you are speaking. Hang up and call the jail directly if you are unsure.

There have been no requests for money, but the calls are causing a great deal of anguish to families and friends of inmates, jail officials said.
