COLUMBUS, Ind. — Bartholomew County Sheriff Matt Myers welcomed the department’s newest deputy on Tuesday, Dayan Smith, 23.

Smith was sworn in Tuesday morning and immediately began his duties at the Sheriff’s Youth Academy which began today at CERAland.

Smith graduated from Greenwood High School and Anderson University. He spent one year as a member of the Columbus, Georgia Police Department working DUI and Family Violence cases.

Smith went through a background investigation, polygraph and in-depth interviews with the department’s leadership team and merit board.

Smith said he was looking to find a smaller law enforcement department located closer to family and his job search led him to Bartholomew County.
