Columbus police arrested a 19-year-old in the stabbing death of his roommate after an early-morning altercation Tuesday in a local apartment complex.

Police were sent to the Quail Run Apartments in the 1000 block of Robert Drive shortly before 6 a.m. Tuesday in regards to the incident, said Lt. Matt Harris, Columbus Police Department spokesman.

When officers arrived at the apartment, they located a male with multiple stab wounds. The injured man was transported to Columbus Regional Hospital where he died of his injuries a short time later, Harris said.

Bartholomew County Coroner Clayton Nolting identified the victim as Eric Cavanaugh, 19, of 1075 Robert Drive, Apartment B, at Quail Run. The victim was pronounced dead at 7:01 a.m. Tuesday at Columbus Regional Hospital.

An autopsy completed Tuesday afternoon at Columbus Regional Hospital revealed that Cavanaugh died of multiple sharp force injuries to his back and chest, believed to have been inflicted by a chef’s knife, Nolting said.

Nolting ruled Cavanaugh’s manner of death to be homicide.

During the course of the investigation, CPD detectives arrested Daniel J. Denny, 19, whose address is also listed as 1075 Robert Drive, Apartment B in Columbus, according to Bartholomew County Jail records.

Police declined to give details about the two 19-year-olds or what led to the stabbing, saying the investigation is ongoing.

Denny was remanded to the Bartholomew County Jail on a preliminary charge of murder, a Level 1 felony, Harris said.

Denny remains incarcerated with no bond on a 48-hour hold at the jail as investigators continue their investigation, Harris said.

Assisting agencies at the scene were Columbus Regional Hospital emergency medical services, Columbus Fire Department, Indiana State Police, Bartholomew County Coroner’s Office and the Bartholomew County Prosecutor’s Office.
