Donnis M. "Donnie" Jones passed away at 1:38 p.m. Tuesday, July 8, 2014, at her home. She was 85 years old.
Donnis was born March 18, 1929, to Harry E. Thompson and Edell Zigler Thompson, along with her twin sister, Dacia Tobias, of Edinburgh, who survives.
Donnis was a 1947 graduate of Edinburgh High School and was employed at Amos-Thompson Corporation from 1948 to 1958. She married Billy G. Jones on August 23, 1957, at Edinburgh United Methodist Church. He survives.
She was the patient and loving mother of five children, Dacia Cathleen Ping of Shelbyville, Patti Suzanne (David) Boggs of Shelbyville, Ernest (Trudy) Jones of Franklin, Casey (Nova) Jones of Edinburgh, and Edell Tobyann (Mark) Carr of Edinburgh, all of whom survive. She is survived by another sister, Wilma Shupperd of Gas City, and was also a wonderful grandmother to 14 grandchildren and 10 great-grandchildren.
Well known to her family, friends and neighbors as an "expert" pie maker, she entered and won multiple pie baking contests at the Shelby County Fair and Edinburgh Fall Festival. She was recognized as a nine-year 4-H leader of the Jackson Willing Workers 4-H Club in Shelby County. She also enjoyed reading, sewing, gardening, mowing, solving crossword puzzles and spending time with her family.
She was preceded in death by her parents and a sister, Julia A. Thompson.
Funeral service will be conducted 2:30 p.m. Saturday, July 12, 2014, at Who So Ever Will Community Church in Edinburgh. Friends may call from 4 to 8 p.m. Friday at the church. Burial will be at Rest Haven Cemetery.
Memorial contributions may be made to the American Heart Association, the National Kidney Foundation or the Breast Cancer Foundation.
Donnis was generously cared for by Gentiva Hospice in the last few months of her life and the family would like to send a special thanks to Dr. Linda Huck, Lisa Lombardo and Stephanie.
She will be deeply missed by her family and friends.
