Betty Lee Everitt, 88, of Columbus, passed away peacefully on August 8, 2014 at Our Hospice of South Central Indiana.

Betty was born January 6, 1926 in Austin to E. J. Buzzard and Esther Maines Buzzard.

Betty is survived by her husband, Bill Everitt of Columbus and her children, Sandy (Kris) Meltzer (Shelbyville, IN), Cindy King (Powell, OH) and Shari Donnelly (Columbus, IN). She is also survived by sisters Marjorie (Fred) Brodt (Scottsburg, IN) and Jackie (Gene) Stevens (Columbus, IN).

Betty was the proud grandmother of Trent (Jenny) Meltzer, Austin King, Madison King, Nathan Donnelly, Blake Donnelly and Morgan Donnelly. In addition, she was the great-grandmother to June Meltzer and Rose Meltzer.

Betty was predeceased by her parents; an infant daughter; grandson Zane Meltzer; and sons-in-law Jim King and Rick Donnelly.

Betty received her undergraduate and master’s degrees from Indiana University. She was an elementary school teacher for over 30 years. Betty and her husband, Bill, coached the tennis teams for Northside Middle School. Betty was actively involved in her community as a board member of Irwin Union Bank and Bartholomew County School Corporation and member of the City Planning Commission. She was also president of Psi Iota Xi and a Girl Scout and 4-H leader. Betty was a significant, positive influence on the lives of many young people and our community is a better place because of her.

The funeral will be at 10 a.m. Tuesday, August 12 at Jewell-Rittman Family Funeral Home with the Dr. Joe Emerson officiating. Calling will be from 4 to 8 p.m. Monday at the funeral home. Burial will be at Garland Brook Cemetery.
