MADRID — Levante is the first team to be relegated from the Spanish top tier after a 3-1 loss at Malaga on Monday.

It was the 21st defeat for Levante in 36 matches, leaving the Valencia club with 29 points and mathematically unable to survive with two rounds left.

Three teams have 35 points — Getafe, Sporting Gijon and Rayo Vallecano — and Granada has 36. The bottom three clubs are relegated to the second tier.

Croatian striker scored for Malaga in the 30th and 89th minutes, and Uruguayan forward Chory Castro added a third in second-half injury time. Midfielder Nogales scored Levante's lone goal in the 42nd at the La Rosaleda Stadium in Malaga.

Levante hasn't played in the lower tier since 2009-10.
