Musical comic set to appear at YES Cinema

Staff Reports

For a full year, life was a tale of two classrooms for Tim Cavanagh.

By day, he taught teens at a Catholic school. At night, he became something of a student, learning the finer points of musical entertaining as a beginner at Chicago comedy clubs.

“Not surprisingly, I found the biggest difference between the classroom and the nightclub was the drunks — which I generally let the principal handle,” he said.

Since leaving the classroom, Cavanagh has brought his comedic songs and inventive stand-up to concert halls, corporations, college campuses and nightclubs across the country. He brings his act to YES Comedy Showcase at 8 p.m. Saturday at YES Cinema, Fourth and Jackson streets in downtown Columbus.

He has been popular locally for several years, thanks in large part to appearances on “The Bob and Tom Show,” a nationally syndicated and Indianapolis-based radio and TV program. He is best known for songs such as “I Wanna Kiss Her (But She Won’t Let Me),” “99 Dead Baboons” and “Get Drunk with Dignity.” His music has attracted audiences as varied as those via Comedy Central, XM Satellite and even the BBC.

But he hardly rests on his classic material to keep people’s attention.

In 2013, his YES performance featured “Jeopardy for Dummies.”

Last year, he introduced “Jokeaoke.” It was like karaoke but focused on a joke.

He set jokes, wrote the punchlines and let the audience members read them. He has acknowledged that, sometimes, they deliver the punchline better than he does.
