Chain reaction impacts two I-65 semis

German Township volunteer firefighters cleaned up a coolant spill after two semis collided in the southbound lanes of Interstate 65.

The accident happened about 3:15 p.m. Monday north of Columbus where semis were slowed in traffic because of an accident ahead of them on the interstate.

One semi, in the left-hand lane, was slowing when a second semi, carrying about 44,000 pounds of brass tubing, struck it from behind, said Deputy Chief Matt Lynch of the German Township Fire Department.

Three bundles of brass tubing, weighing 9,000 pounds, broke free from the trailer and penetrated the back wall of the semi cab, but the driver was not injured, Lynch said.

Firefighters blocked traffic on the interstate to allow Copple’s Towing to off-load part of the semi’s load before towing the semi, Lynch said.
