The Columbus North girls tennis team started off strong on the court during Saturday’s Round Robin at Columbus North until the rain decided to give them a break.
The Bull Dogs’ second match was just about underway against Silver Creek until it was called after a 30-minute rain delay.
In North’s opening match against Greenwood, the Woodmen changed their lineup after the 16th-ranked Bull Dogs defeated them 5-0 on Thursday. The Woodmen lineup change, however, didn’t stop the Bull Dogs from claiming another 5-0 victory.
At No. 1 singles, Aubrey Smith defeated Molly Jacobs 6-1, 6-0. At No. 2 singles, Paige Littrell defeated Abby Chatman 6-1, 6-2. Rosemary Yonushonis put away Maddie Bright 6-0, 6-0 at No. 3 singles.
The No. 1 doubles team of Meagan Olibo and Madelyn Sanders won against Ally Newman and Alyssa Roscoe 6-3, 6-4. At No. 2 doubles, Yijiang Zhao and Brooke Richardson downed Joanna Moran and Sadie Brooks 6-3, 6-4.
“They switched things around on us,” North coach Kendal Hammel said. “The final score, though, was very comparable to what it was when we played them on Thursday. It is unfortunate we could not get our match against Silver Creek in before the rain got here.”
The Bull Dogs (15-7) now switch focus toward this week’s Columbus East Sectional, but before they can start, they have one last dual match against No. 26 Terre Haute South on Monday. North defeated the Braves 3-2 during the Conference Indiana semifinals May 9 en route to winning the title.
“It was a really good match with them during the conference,” Hammel said. “It is very good competition that will get them ready to go at sectional.”
The drawing for the sectional will take place Monday. The East Sectional begins Wednesday.
