Robert Lynn Voelz, 85, of Columbus, passed from this life at 2:47 a.m. Saturday, May 21, 2016, at Columbus Regional Hospital.

Mr. Voelz was born Nov. 17, 1930, in Columbus, to Lynn and Beunell Chrisman Voelz. He married Margaret A. Niles Nov. 12, 1988.

Mr. Voelz was a 1948 graduate of Columbus High School and received a bachelors degree in engineering from the University of Texas.

Mr. Voelz was a U.S. Air Force veteran of the Korean War. He rose to the rank of Staff Sergeant and was honorably discharged Aug. 20, 1954.

For thirteen years, Mr. Voelz was an engineer at the Cummins Engine Company Tech Center. He later became the owner and operator of Voelz Avionics now known as Eagle Avionics where he continued to work part-time.

He was a life long member of St. Peter’s Lutheran Church in Columbus and formerly sang in the Barber Shop Quartet. He flew single engine planes as a hobby, enjoyed rifle shooting and loved to play bridge.

Mr. Voelz is survived by his wife of 27 years, Margaret; three daughters; three grandchildren; four great-grandchildren; two step-daughters; three step-grandsons; a sister; and a brother.

Mr. Voelz was preceded in death by his parents; an infant twin brother; and a stepson.

In keeping with Mr. Voelz wishes, cremation is planned. A private service will be held at the convenience of the family. Military honors will be presented by the Bartholomew County Veterans Honor Guard.

Memorial contributions may be made to the Muscular Dystrophy Association or the Indiana Chapter of Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation.
