History lesson through fashion

Jennings County’s celebration of Indiana’s 200th birthday is drawing near as a fashion show of period clothing is a little more than a week away.

Final preparations are underway for a bicentennial social and fashion event Aug. 18 at the Park Theatre Civic Centre in North Vernon.

The event begins at 6 p.m. with a social hour at the Stellar Plaza. The social hour, which is free for ticket holders, will include live music, historical re-enactors and a buffet of snacks and appetizers. However, anyone wishing to attend the buffet must purchase a ticket Saturday, said bicentennial committee member Dorothy Williams.

The Jennings County High School Fiddle Club will perform music of the 1800s, arranged by Eric Jarboe, during the social hour.

The social hour will be followed by the fashion show in the Park Theatre Civic Centre at 7 p.m. Tickets for the fashion show cost $10.

“I don’t think you will want to wait to the event to buy tickets at the door because ticket sales are picking-up and we have two large groups expected to turn in their ticket orders,” Williams said.

“We have had some questions about who can attend. This is open to everyone and everyone is welcome, but we only have 290 seats, so please don’t wait to the last moment to get your ticket,” she added.

The fashion show will begin with a presentation of historically correct Native American clothing that would have been worn by the first inhabitants of Jennings County, followed by models in clothing worn by the first European settlers.

Live models will wear renditions of the clothing worn from the early days of Jennings County through modern times, while a photographic display of cultural events of Jennings County will play in the background.

The Gene Rudicel Brass Band will perform during the fashion show, and recorded music selected for the event by Jarboe will be played.
