State Street work to begin

Construction will kick off next week along State Street that could cause some delays for motorists until mid-December.

The northern westbound lane of State Street will be closed and will result in only one lane being accessible as crews work on the Haw Creek Bridge deck, redevelopment director Heather Pope said.

The project also will result in McKinley Avenue being closed until at least Dec. 16, Pope said.

Work on the State Street improvement plan includes widening sidewalks and adding rails on both sides of the Haw Creek Bridge, said Dave Hayward, executive director of public works/city engineer.

Once work on the northern lane is completed, workers will shift to the other lane in the spring, he said.
