Man hit on road dies

A local man who was seriously injured after being struck by a vehicle has died.

Robert S. Compton, 40, Columbus, was taken by LifeLine helicopter to Indiana University Health Methodist Hospital in Indianapolis. Compton suffered a serious head injury as a result of the 6 p.m. Thursday accident near Marr Road and Pavilion Drive.

The Marion County Coroner’s office said Compton died at 11:26 p.m. Friday after being hospitalized in the intensive care unit of the hospital.

Witnesses told Columbus police that Compton was walking east across Marr Road when he was nearly struck by a vehicle traveling south, said Lt. Matt Harris, Columbus Police Department spokesman. A short time later, Compton was struck by a vehicle driven by Keri L. Hobbs, 32, Columbus, who was driving north on Marr Road, Harris said.

Hobbs told police she did not see Compton until he was directly in front of her, Harris said. When police arrived at the scene, they found Compton unresponsive in the roadway and Compton was taken to Columbus Regional Hospital before being transported to the Indianapolis hospital.
